Due to a stolen delivery truck, this week’s Ramona Sentinel issue may not be delivered until Friday, Dec. 31.

The Ramona Sentinel won a total of 16 awards at the San Diego Press Club’s 49th annual Excellence in Journalism Awards Ceremony on Oct. 25.

The contest is one of the largest in the country and had numerous entries among several media divisions. The awards ceremony was held next to the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages in Balboa Park.

Julie Gallant, a reporter at the Sentinel for five years, won nine awards, including four first-place honors, in the Non-daily newspapers category:

Business and Financial, first place — “Vines & Wines: Ramona wineries think outside the box to market their businesses”

Multicultural, first place — “Mesa Grande tribe embarks on plans to repurpose Ramona’s Golden Eagle Farm”

Real Estate, first place — “Developer presents long-awaited plans for Ramona Intergenerational Community Campus”

Travel – International, first place — “Ramona family headed for Papua New Guinea to provide hospital flights”

Gardening, second place — “Ramona’s Rosary Garden is a creative place for meditating and smelling the roses”

History, second place — “Ramona Boys & Girls Club grows from a vision to a bustling youth center over three decades”

Education, third place — “Ramona High aerospace engineering students learn about inclusion at model rocket launch”

Environment, third place — “Ramona Planning Group gives on proposed national monument”

Feature – Light Subject, third place — “Little Free Libraries in Ramona full of good reads and literary benefits”

Editor Susan Gill Vardon won two first place awards in the Non-daily newspapers category:

Feature-Light Subject — “Friendly competition brings top dollar for ‘world famous’ cookies at Ramona Junior Fair Pie Auction”

Education — “Judge rules Ramona Unified violated state voting rights act in 2020 at-large election”

Freelance writer Regina Elling won five awards, including two first-place honors in the Nondaily newspapers category

Food, first place — “’Respect the animal’ motto for Ramona traveling butcher”

Wildlife/Nature, first place — “Ramona neighbors band together to rescue owl stuck on utility lines”

Science/Technology/Biotech, second place“High-speed network aids in firefighting, space and environmental research”

Gardening, third place — “Ramona couple are experts in training their dragonfruit”

Business and Financial, honorable mention — “Miniature sheep are gaining in popularity at Oasis Camel Dairy”

The Union-Tribune Community Press won a total of 61 awards, including 18 first, 17 second, 17 third and nine honorable mentions.
