SAN DIEGO  — An 11-year-old boy playing toy swords with a friend suffered serious injuries Saturday evening when he stepped into the street and was struck by a car in the Point Loma area, police said.

San Diego police said the boy was playing a toy sword fight game with a friend at about 7 p.m. when he stepped onto Catalina Boulevard from a dirt path between Dudley and Charles streets near Point Loma Nazarene University.

A driver traveling south collided with the boy, who suffered a fractured pelvis, leg fractures, a hematoma on the left side of his head and many abrasions. He was taken to the hospital. Police had no further information regarding his condition as of mid-day Sunday.

Investigators said drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision. Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
