CLAIREMONT — The Toby Wells YMCA in Clairemont Mesa was closed Saturday in the wake of an arson and vandalism spree that damaged some of the facility’s outdoor areas.

In a statement on its website the YMCA said that there was “significant damage” to an outdoor soccer arena and the nearby park area at the facility, located on Overland Drive between Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and Lightwave Avenue. The fire damaged the south wall of the arena and the turf. No dollar estimate of the damage was available.

Despite the damage the facility will be open for its regular hours Sunday. The Toby Wells YMCA is also host to a large youth summer camp. Officials said the camp will be open as usual on Monday.

The fire broke out around 11 p.m. Friday, and was rapidly knocked down by crews from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
