Meet authors

The American Association of University Women Poway-Penasquitos branch will hold its Author’s Luncheon fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at The Heights Golf Club, 16066 Bernardo Heights Parkway in Rancho Bernardo. Check-in starts at 10 a.m.

Featured will be Tammy Leitner, a Peabody Award and multiple Emmy Award winning investigative Journalist; and T. Jefferson Parker, a New York Times bestselling author of 28 novels, triple Edgar Award winner and LA Times Book Prize winner.

Spring garden tour

The Seven Oaks Garden Club will feature six local gardens during its annual spring garden tour. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.

Scholarships for non-traditional college women

The American Association of University Women Poway-Penasquitos branch is accepting applications for its scholarships designed for women in college. Scholarship amounts are approximately $2,000. The application deadline is May 1.

To be eligible, applicants must be a high school graduate or have their GED, but no bachelor’s degree. They must be a non-traditional student (at least 23 years of age and have experienced challenges in life and education that differ from a traditional four-year path). They must live or attend school in San Diego County, be enrolled or accepted in a degree program at a community college or four-year college or university and currently taking at least 6 units toward a stated goal. They must also have already completed at least 20 college-level credits with a minimum GPA of 2.25, excluding physical education and remedial classes and not be a previous AAUW Poway-Penasquitos scholarship recipient.

Reunion for Escondido High alumni from 1974 and before

A golden reunion will be held for all Escondido High School alumni from the Class of 1974 and before. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 18 in Escondido High’s football stadium.

Recruiting for Sheriff’s Senior Volunteer Patrol

The San Diego County Sheriff’s stations in Poway and 4S Ranch are looking for adults to the Senior Volunteer Patrol. Duties include patrolling neighborhoods in Poway or 4S Ranch, checking on homes of residents on vacation, traffic control, and checking on the welfare of residents as part of the Sheriff’s Department’s “You Are Not Alone” program. It is a great way to give back and help your local community.

Volunteers must be at least 50 years old, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, and have a valid California driver’s license and car insurance. Volunteers must be of good moral character with no felony convictions and attend a two-week Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy. Volunteers typically work up to five hours per week. Food assistance available

The Community Food Connection distributes food three times a week to those in need. Distributions are from 3 to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 14047 Twin Peaks Road, Building C behind Trinity Church in Poway.

The nonprofit organization also needs volunteers to help with packing food, distribution and to pick up food from local stores.

Friends of the Rancho Bernardo Library book shop is open from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays, 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. The shop is inside the library at 17110 Bernardo Center Drive.
