
The Ramona Sentinel won a total of six awards, including four for first place, in the San Diego Press Club’s 51st annual Excellence in Journalism Awards competition.
The ceremony was held Oct. 22 at the Liberty Station Conference Center in Point Loma.
The competition is among the largest in the country, honoring the work by hundreds of San Diego County media and communications professionals, according to the organization.
Reporter Julie Gallant won one award, a first place for Election Coverage in the Non-daily newspapers category. The winning story was “Ramona Unified trustees weigh options for putting school facilities bond on November ballot.”
Freelance writer Regina Elling won five awards, including three first-place honors, in the Non-daily newspapers category.
Gardening, first place: “Ramona couple use maps and YouTube channel to put spotlight on local farmstands.”
Profile, first place: “Sharing his love of music helped Ramona musician to heal, help others.”
Second place: “‘Old Man River’ tackles trash, water issues on neglected property in Ramona.”
Third place: “Custom hats are a feather in the cap for Ramona designer Tara Holsapple.”
Wildlife/Nature: first place, “Ramona barn owl drama can be watched worldwide on livestream.”
