It’s time for those of all ages to start reading in order to earn prizes this summer.

The summer reading program for the San Diego Public Library began on June 1 and will continue through Aug. 31.

The program is free for everyone – from infants being read to by family through senior citizens. Any reading counts, including books, magazines and newspapers.

Participants need to complete a combination of reading 10 books, for 10 hours or completing 10 library activities. The 10 can be all of one option or a mix of options. Once their reading log is filled, participants can turn the to redeem prizes.

The San Diego Public Library’s program, offered at all branches including the Pacific Beach/Taylor Library, is themed “Level Up at Your Library.” Participants can at sandiego.gov/summerreading or go to any branch to pick up a paper version of the reading log.

The PB Library is at 4275 Cass Street.

As for the prizes, for children (ages 0-11) they receive a book; es for two to the San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Model Railroad Museum and San Diego Automotive Museum; and one to the Children’s Discovery Museum.

For teens (ages 12-17) the prizes are a book and es for two to the Natural History, Model Railroad and Automotive museums. By just g up, teens will also be entered to win prizes in monthly drawings.

Adults will receive a free book from participating Friends of the Library Book Sales and Used Bookstores and a for two to the San Diego Natural History Museum.

PB Library Branch Manager Christina Wainwright said last year at the PB Library there were 582 who enrolled and 409 completed the program. As for those who submitted their completed log, there were 36 in ages infant to 2 years, 85 in ages 3 to 5 and 163 in ages 6 to 11. Also completing were 27 teens and 98 adults.

“Our branch was only 1 of 36 locations in SDPL that participated … in 2024,” Wainwright said. “Across SDPL there were 32,069 enrollments and 24,467 finishers, a 76% completion rate.”

There will also be extra activities at the libraries. For example, in Pacific Beach there will be a “Farkle Fiesta” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 18 where all are invited to play the fast-paced and family-friendly dice game while munching on finger foods.

At 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 16 people can bring in puzzles and games they no longer want to play and take home one brought by others.

A jigsaw puzzle contest will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20 where patrons will try to be the fastest at completing a 500-piece puzzle. Space is limited, so at tinyurl.com/PB-puzzles.
