Genealogy buffs hold free class

Art in the Village fair

The Carlsbad Village Association’s Art in the Village fair is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 22 along State Street and Grand Avenue. The open-air art show brings together more than 150 local and regional fine artists with works ranging from watercolor, oils, mixed media and photography to glasswork, woodworking, jewelry, pottery and sculpture. Highlights include live music, art demonstrations, a Chalk Zone with live painting by artists, free art making, a pavilion for families and face painting. California Wine Festival

The two-day California Wine Festival is from 6:30 to 9 p.m. June 20 for the Sunset Rare & Reserve Tasting and from 1 to 4 p.m. June 21 (VIP entry at noon) for the Beachside Wine Festival at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort Golf Club & Spa, 7100 Aviara Resort Drive. The evening event includes gourmet appetizers, live music and a silent auction benefiting a local charitable organization. Friday summer concerts in the park

Carlsbad will run its summer TGIF Concerts in the Parks from June 20 to Aug. 22, featuring a range of music from country, rock, pop and funk to R&B, Cumbia, Americana and doo-wop. The concerts are from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and gates open at 4 p.m. The schedule at Stagecoach Community Park is June 20, The Highwayman Show (vintage country); June 27, Full Strength (Top 40, funk and dance); July 11, The Reflexx (80s pop and new wave) and July 18, The Cold Fact (soulful R&B). The lineup at Calavera Hills Community Park is July 25, Kimba Light (Cumbia); Aug. 1, Shakedown String Band (Americana/jam band) and Aug. 8, The Honeydrops (doo-wop, rockabilly from 40s-60s). The last two concerts are at Alga Norte Community Park: Aug. 15, Wayward Sons (power chord rock nostalgia) and Aug. 22, Euphoria Brass Band (modern New Orleans-style jazz). Nature walk at lagoon

The Batiquitos Lagoon will have a free nature walk at 10 a.m. June 21. The moderately strenuous hike up a rarely visited trail with views will be led by a docent. Nonfiction writer’s group meets

Fire chief, historian to speak at meeting

The Grossmont-Mt. Helix Improvement Association will hold its annual dinner meeting at 5:30 p.m. June 21 at the Cuyamaca College Student Center, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway. Switchfoot Bro-Am will put on its 21st free, family-friendly Beach Fest from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 21 at Moonlight Beach, 400 B St. The surf contest is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and live music is from noon to 5 p.m. There will be a vendor village along with food and drinks for sale. Encinitas Cruise Nights

The summer cruise nights with classic and vintage cars and local bands continues from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 19 along Coast Highway 101 in downtown Encinitas. Animal shelter runs summer camp

Summer Animal Camp at Rancho Coastal Humane Society runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, June 16 to Aug. 15. Weeks 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 are for campers ages 6-10 and Weeks 4, 5, 6 and 9 are for campers ages 11-14. The Animal Camp is an educational experience that includes hands-on interaction with animals along with arts, crafts and outdoor activities. Scholarships are available. Soccer match to benefit kids with cancer

So Cal Dutch Lions WPSL soccer team is holding a charity soccer match at 7 p.m. June 20 at San Dieguito High School to benefit Heroes, Haircuts and Hotcakes. Jenika Davis, an Encinitas resident and student-athlete at UC Irvine, was diagnosed with AML leukemia during her freshman year of college and later founded the nonprofit Heroes, Haircuts and Hotcakes to kids with cancer. Rancho Coastal Humane Society will host a free Pet Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon June 14, while supplies last, at Brock’s Community Pet Food Bank on the RCHS North Campus, 389 Requeza St. Vaccinations include DAPP for dogs, H for cats and rabies. Arts Awards Dinner

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido will put on its inaugural North County Arts Awards dinner from 6 to 8 p.m. June 28, celebrating North County creativity and honoring individuals in 18 categories in visual, culinary and performing arts. Artist’s work featured at music fest

Mainly Mozart, in collaboration with The Art of Autism, hosts Fallbrook-based artist Joel Anderson as its inaugural Mainly Mozart artist-in-residence. As the 2025 artist-in-residence, Anderson’s art will be featured at the annual Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra Festival, running June 18-28. Anderson’s collection will be showcased at the festival’s two primary venues, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center and UC San Diego’s Epstein Family Amphitheater. The exhibition will feature original pieces and lithographs, available for purchase. In addition to the exhibition, Anderson’s depictions of legendary composers Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Bach will be incorporated into the festival. Visit theconrad.org.

Financial literacy program for youths kicks off

The La Mesa Juneteenth Foundation hosts a Community Pancake Breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon June 19 at MacArthur Park to kick off its Youth Financial Literacy Program. The event includes kids’ activities to celebrate the launch of “Start From Zero,” a financial literacy program for youths and families in La Mesa, Spring Valley and Lemon Grove. The program, in partnership with Mission Federal Credit Union, gives each participating seventh and eighth grader $25 to open their own savings after completing a financial literacy course. Local Alcoholics Anonymous has text-based hotline

The North County San Diego Alcoholics Anonymous launched a text-based helpline for community who are seeking help and so they can reach someone 24 hours a day. Those looking to become sober can text an AA volunteer any time day or night and receive from a member of the AA team of recovering alcoholics. The text helpline is currently available for people in North County, including Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, Julian, Oceanside, Poway, Ramona, San Marcos, Vista and Valley Center. Republican women’s group meets

Juneteenth Jubilee

North San Diego County NAA’s annual Juneteenth multicultural celebration is at 10 a.m. June 21 at Pier View Way and Freeman Street in downtown Oceanside. There will be food and retail vendors, youth performances, a gaming truck, a job fair, health screenings, kids games and face painting along with health and fitness booths. Pickleball Tournament benefits Alzheimer’s Association

Ice Cream Festival

The seventh annual Scoop San Diego Ice Cream Festival is from noon to 4 p.m. June 22 at 3000 North Park Way, presented by Pacific Health Group. The event features samplings from more than 30 of the area’s top ice cream, gelato and paleta makers along with music, family activities and demonstrations. There will be exclusive flavors created with recovered produce from local nonprofit ProduceGood, to highlight a community commitment to reduce food waste and help those in need. New this year is a Best Ice Cream Flavor of the Year competition judged by celebrity chefs Claudia Sandoval, Zuliya Khawaja and Sam The Cooking Guy. Balboa Park Twilight Concerts

Black Arts Festival

The Juneteenth Black Arts Festival will be held June 19-22, hosted by San Diego Black Artist Collective at the Diversionary Theatre, 4545 Park Blvd. The festival highlights visual art, dance, music, and acting. The festival starts with an evening of spoken word and music, followed by a reading series and poetry on day two, a multidisciplinary showcase of dance, music, poetry and more on day three and a gospel brunch on day four. The San Diego Taste of Little Italy runs from 4 to 8 p.m. June 17-18, featuring food and live music. Volunteers sought to clear trails

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park’s trails maintenance volunteer unit is looking for volunteers. The group clears trails of brush and fallen tree branches and works on grading over 80 miles of park trails. Widows and widowers group holds events

The San Diego Widows and Widowers group hosts Cribbage at 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Euchre at 1 p.m. Wednesdays at the Food Court in Grossmont Center in La Mesa. or prospective who want to learn to play are welcome. Concerts at the Cove

San Diego-based nonprofit Resounding Joy will put on its second Pickleball Fundraiser on June 28 at The Hub Pickleball, 9545 Campo Road.
