Eddie was born in Bennettsville (Marlboro County), South Carolina in 1937.
In 1954, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was sent to San Diego for Boot Camp at NTC. In August 1955, he began training at the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps School at Balboa Navy Hospital, San Diego, In March 1957, upon completion of Field Medical Training, he received orders to serve with the U.S. Marine Corps Aircraft Wing at El Toro (Santa Ana, CA). His last duty assignment was with the 1st Marine Corps Aircraft Wing, Fleet Marine Force Pacific in the Far East.
Eddie began college at California Western University in San Diego, transferring to San Diego State College. He was also an alumni of Grossmont and Cuyamaca Colleges.
His hobbies included vocal and instrumental music throughout his life. In Boot Camp at NTC, San Diego, Eddie played in the Drum and Bugle Corps. Years later, he played in the Grossmont College Concert Orchestra. Eddie has sung most of his life in church choirs, and was a long-time member of the Foothills United Methodist Chancel Choir.
In 1963, Eddie started to work with Armour-Dial, Inc. in the San Diego District. His job responsibilities included District Manager of the Fresno, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego Districts. Eddie retired in 1992 after a 28 year career with the Dial Corporation.
In 1979, Eddie was accepted in the San Diego Chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. He spent 14 years as a tenor singing barbershop.
Eddie always had a desire to become a pilot so while in his 20’s, he earned his private pilot’s license. He went on to fly in the areas where he lived throughout his work career. Eddie received a 50 year pin from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. In 1992, he became a member of the Silver Wings Fraternity, later serving as President of the San Diego Chapter. Eddie received a 50 year Gold Card and a 50 year Silver Wings pin with a Gold Star and Silver Wreath.
Eddie was a member of San Diego Masonic Lodge #35 in Mission Valley. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite.
Eddie was married to Sarah Judith Prevatte for 38 years until her death in 1998. They had three daughters together; Barbara, Xander and Pam.
Eddie leaves behind his long-time partner, Corena Burgess. Eddie and Corine were together since February 2003.
A memorial service will be held at Foothills United Methodist Church, 4031 Avocado Blvd, Spring Valley, CA 91977 on June 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Foothills United Methodist Church, Music Ministries in memory of Eddie.
